ROOTS DISCIPLESHIP CHALLENGE Week 4 / Accountability

This week we will be focusing on an Essential of Discipleship that we believe is absolutely crucial to the Christian walk:

ACCOUNTABILITY: courageously asking the tough questions.

Whether we recognize it or not, we all have many different voices speaking into our lives on a consistent basis. We have family and friends, co-workers, teachers, podcasts, media, TV, movies, and social media all giving us messages about what we should think and believe. With each voice, we can be moved closer to Christ, or have the potential to be pulled away from Him.

It is because of this fact that Scripture often talks about the value of having people who will speak truth to us, help reveal any sin in our lives, and will spur us on to become more like Christ.

We need a consistent voice that will speak truth in love, even when it hurts. A person who loves us enough to reveal blindspots in our lives, and cares enough to challenge us towards the changes we need to make on our path to spiritual maturity.

The heart of accountability is love, coupled with the genuine desire to see the person you are walking alongside become more like Christ. The goal should never be to “zing” someone with their failure or sin, but instead to gently but boldly reveal areas where growth is needed.

With each Essential, there is a central question to ask as you meet together. For this week’s topic the question is: How is your progress?

How are you growing? How is your time with God? How are you seeing Him work in you? These are all questions we ask for healthy accountability.

We hope you find the article, video and verse helpful today, and we encourage you to find that person or group of people who will consistently and lovingly point you to Christ!

With much love,

Pastor Dave

Video to Watch:

You Cannot Follow Jesus By Yourself / This video is Robby Gallaty speaking at a men’s conference, but I think it gets the point across.

Verse to Memorize:

Galatians 6:1-2 (ESV)

6 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
