ROOTS DISCIPLESHIP CHALLENGE Week 3 / Truth
ROOTS DISCIPLESHIP CHALLENGE
Week 3 / Truth
Thanks again for joining us on this journey as we go through the Five Essentials of Discipleship: Care, Truth, Accountability, Prayer, & Vision-Casting. How’s it going so far? Is it helpful? Are you keeping up with it?
In this odd time of physical separation, we really have no clue who is actually following along with the reading, video, or memory verse. Our prayer is that we all are! Know that each element is thought through, prayed over, and something we believe is absolutely essential to becoming a multiplying disciple of Christ.
This week’s Essential is:
TRUTH: increasingly coming to know God through His Word.
As we mentioned last week, each Essential has one big question that is helpful to ask every discipleship meeting. The question for Truth is: What are you learning?
If you remember, our definition of discipleship is: “Intentionally pouring my life and God’s truth into another person until they get it, live it, and share it.” One thing you will notice about the definition is that it says, “my life and God’s truth.” Discipleship must be about more than just passing on what we know, it has to go deeper, it has to lead people to the Source of truth!
There is an old saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This has never been more true than in discipleship. We want the person we are pouring into to love God’s Word, to know God’s Word, and to know how to read and understand God’s Word. If our discipleship is based off good, but second-hand information, and the disciple never learns to read and understand Scripture for him/herself - then once we end the relationship we risk leaving them without the tools for a life-long walk with the Lord.
So, allow Scripture to be the foundation of your discipleship. Study the word together, memorize verses together, pray Scripture together, and give Scriptural advice to each other.
God’s Word is “living and active” and it “will not return void” - so as we invest in others, let’s lead them to His Word and trust that He will speak through it!
