Words / Proverbs 12:18

Proverbs 12:18 / Words.

The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

“Sticks and stones might break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

Ever heard that saying before? As a kid, I remember saying that to my siblings in a sing-song voice, in an attempt to deflect whatever tactic they were using to get me mad or upset.

I repeated that saying because I heard them say it, but the problem is, it is simply not true.

Words hurt. Words DO affect us. Many times, on a deeper than physical level.

The author of Proverbs said that words are like the piercing of a sword. In the book of James, the author compared the tongue to a small fire that sets a forest ablaze. He described it as, “a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:1-12).

As believers, we have to be careful with our words. More than that, we have to see our words as a tool for God’s Kingdom. We have to recognize that what we say can either bring peace or discord, healing or hurt, encouragement or pain.

As we walk through these challenging times and navigate this election and current political climate – Roots Community, please let your words bring HEALING. Weigh your words heavily and pray about what you say before you say it.

Let’s be a people that brings peace into every conversation we enter, and reminds people of the peace they can have through Christ.

Our words matter, so let’s use them intentionally for the Lord.

With much love,

Pastor Dave
