Matthew 10:26-33 / Why we can be bold

In Matthew 10, Jesus sent out the disciples on mission to share the Good News with those around them. He gave them instructions in how to do that, along with an honest warning about what they should expect as they go:

16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles.

Persecution would come. In fact, it was to be expected.

They were going out as sheep among wolves, which is not a very comforting idea! The disciples would be facing challenges and opposition unlike they had ever seen before. Jesus wanted them to be ready for what they would experience, so he gave them four reasons to be bold instead of afraid. Now, these apply to us as we try to share the Good News in a world that is increasingly against it:

First, we know the truth will ultimately come out.

26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.

We can share boldly knowing that the truth of the Gospel will ultimately be validated! One day, everyone who doubted, cursed, or worked against the message of the Gospel is going to see that what we were sharing was the loving truth that truly does bring Salvation. We can share in that confidence!

Second, we know the judgment of God is just, and real…

28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

If we really boil it all the way down, we realize that anything that is done to us here is temporary. So, even though painful, it pales in comparison to the pain of missing eternity with Christ. That truth should help us boldly walk through persecution, while also compelling us to try to see as many as possible find Christ and avoid the judgment we know is coming.

Third, we know the care of God is comprehensive and complete.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Another reason to not fear is the incredible love of God. He is omniscient – all knowing – in how He loves us. When we face hardship, being mocked by a co-worker, held back from a promotion, unfairly judged because of our faith – He sees. He knows. He cares. God loves us with a perfect love, and there is no better Comforter or Encourager than the One Who Sees all!

Fourth, we know the work we do here is reflected in Heaven.

32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

Our bold stands for Christ mean something. Not just in this world, but in the next! The God Who Sees knows when we took that risk, said that loving but hard truth, walked across the room to share the Gospel with a stranger and He rewards it. So, don’t give up. Don’t stop sharing! The impact of your sharing not only has an eternal impact on the person you share with, but on yours as well!

So – Who is God laying on your heart to share the Gospel with today? Boldly, but not brashly. In love, knowing it will be the best news they could ever hear?

Blessings,
