The Gospel Makes Us Parents

The Gospel Makes Us Parents

"For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel." 1 Corinthians 4:15

"But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us." 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8

Twice Paul likens his Gospel efforts to parenting. To the Corinthians he was a "father in Christ Jesus through the gospel," and to the Thessalonians he was, "gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children."

God's spiritual children need guidance and love in the same way that biological children do. In that sense, Paul was a parent to them. Though he did not have biological children in those churches, he assumed the role of a spiritual parent "in Christ Jesus through the gospel." The Gospel made him a parent.

Would you consider yourself a spiritual father to someone?
Would you consider yourself a spiritual mother to someone?

People in our lives need the loving guidance of spiritual parents on their spiritual journey! Let's assume the role of father or mother whether we have biological children or not. And with enough affection, tenderness, time, and Gospel-saturated guidance-- we may experience the blessing of raising up spiritual children in the family of God.
