Judges 21:25/ Who Determines What is "Right"

Judges 21:25/ Who Determines What is "Right"

“In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25

Who determines what is “right?” In the book of Judges, God’s people had decided that they do. Rather than allow God to determine “right” for them, everyone just “did what was right in his own eyes.”

This was deadly then and it has been deadly since the beginning. In Genesis, God said Adam and Eve could eat of any tree in the garden except one— He established what was “right.” But Adam and Eve quickly made their own determination about what was “right” in Genesis chapter 3, verse 6:

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” Adam and Eve did what was right in their own eyes, and this proved deadly as sin entered the world." Genesis 3:6

All of us battle this desire to determine what is “right” for ourselves. We must leave that to God! Every day we have a choice between doing what is right in our own eyes and doing what is right in God’s eyes. And based on what we know from the Garden of Eden and Israel, things will not go well for us if we do what is right in our own eyes.

Come under God’s determination of “right.” Give yourself fully to His ways. Trust that He knows best. Things will go much better for us if do what is right in His eyes instead of our own.
